Copper prices have reached a record high, ending 2010 at $9,660 per metric tonne. This represents a 30% increase over the year, half of which occurred during December. Analysts have forecasted that prices will continue to rise through 2011. A supply deficit of 400,000 tonnes predicted for the year owing to declining ore grades in Chile, the world’s most prolific provider of the metal used in copper wiring, will put added pressure on the market.
Owing to the rapidity of the changes suppliers will be increasing prices on all copper cabling. At this turbulent time it is not yet known to what extent this will impact upon cabling costs.
